People are criticizing Australian prime minister Scott Morrison after he interrupted a woman MP while she was answering a question about the culture for women in politics.
On Tuesday, a day after an ABC News investigation revealed allegations of sexism and misconduct by ministers in Morrison’s ruling party, a journalist asked Anne Ruston, the minister for families and social services, whether the workplace culture in the government had changed for women since 2018, when the “bonk ban”, which prohibited ministers from having sexual relations with their staff, was introduced.
Ruston had barely begun answering the question when Morrison cut in to criticize the use of the term “bonk ban”, saying that it dismisses the seriousness of the issue, before allowing Ruston to finish her response.
The clip of the moment has since gone viral on social media, with people criticizing Morrison’s tone deaf behavior. In the same press conference, Morrison also defended attorney general Christian Porter and population minister Alan Tudge, both of whom had been accused of misconduct towards women.
Morrison said that “these things happen in Australia… and people greatly regret them,” adding that his government would not be investigating the allegations further as they had been dealt with at the time.
