This Norwegian Biathlete Admitted He Cheated On His Ex-Girlfriend Live On TV Right After Winning Bronze
"Three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her. I told her about it a week ago. It's been the worst week of my life."
Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid has caused a controversy after he admitted he cheated on his ex-girlfriend during an interview after he won Bronze in the men’s 20km individual biathlon at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
in a post-race interview on Tuesday, Feb. 10, Norwegian state broadcaster NRK asked Lægreid how he felt about winning the bronze medal, but instead of replying to the question he confessed to cheating to his girlfriend on live TV.
"Three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her. I told her about it a week ago. It's been the worst week of my life," the 28-year-old medallist said.
The moment sparked controversy, with many criticizing his audacity, while others said it overshadowed Norway's triumphs at the event, especially since Lægreid’s teammate, Johan-Olav Botn, had placed first in the same event.
Lægreid’s ex-girlfriend has since responded anonymously to NRK, saying his actions were “hard to forgive, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world."
Viewers have taken to roasting Lægreid’s confession, with people commenting “bro overshared at olympic level 😭🎿” and “bro folded under 0 pressure 😂😂.”
On Wednesday, Feb. 11, NRK shared a statement from Lægreid saying he "deeply regrets" sharing his confession at the competition, taking the moment from Botn who won gold.
“My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning gold. My apologies also go to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well. I can't change this, but I will now put this behind me and focus on the Olympics," he told NRK, adding, "I am not quite myself these days, and I am not thinking clearly.”
Team Norway has also been mourning the loss of biathlete 27-year-old Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who was found dead in his hotel room while at training camp before the Olympics in Dec. 2025.
