These Two Hero Taiwanese Dogs Helped Discover Earthquake Victims And Then gave Very Good Interviews
Wilson and Roger were sent to Taroko National Park in Hualien, which was severely affected by the quake, and led a rescue team of 12 humans to look for injured and dead victims on a hiking trail.
Two search and rescue dogs in Taiwan have won the hearts of many after they not only helped to identify and rescue three people trapped in the rubble after the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck on Wednesday, April 3.
The quake, the biggest in Taiwan in 25 years, was felt across the country, killing at least 13 people and injuring nearly 1,000 others.
The two dogs, Wilson and Roger, were sent to Taroko National Park in Hualien, which was severely affected by the quake, and led a rescue team of 12 humans to look for injured and dead victims on a hiking trail.
Despite the fact that it was his first mission, Wilson a three-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, showed remarkable dedication and scrambled through boulders to discover the bodies of two victims.
It was because he wagged his tail that rescuers were alerted and began digging by hand to unearth the two victims.
Speaking later at an interview with a local TV station,Wilson excitedly bit onto the microphone, prompting his human rescuer to instruct him to leave it.
Meanwhile, Roger, an eight-year-old labrador, successfully located the whereabouts of the third victim.
Roger’s human, Lee Xinhong said that dogs like Roger are trained to find survivors and bark but Roger did not bark but instead returned repeatedly to the area, which caught his attention and prompted him to discover the victim.
Lee said that Roger may not have barked due to the differences in scent between victims and survivors.
During his TV interview, Roger also suddenly lurched and bit onto the microphone, surprising the humans.
Originally a drug detection dog, Roger was reassigned as a search and rescue dog due to his lively and energetic personality, which made it difficult for him to focus on detecting drugs.
As a rescue dog, he also participated in the rescue operation following the collapse of a building during another earthquake in 2018.
