A Man In Taiwan Set Off Smoke Bombs And Went On Stabbing Rampage In A Busy Taipei Area, Killing Four People
Four people were killed in the attack, including the attacker and a bystander who tried to stop the attacker, and several others injured.
A man set off smoke bombs and carried out a stabbing spree in Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, killing three people and injuring 11 others.
On the evening of Friday, Dec. 19, a 27-year-old Taiwanese man later named as Chang Wen, set off smoke bombs and Molotov cocktails inside Taipei’s main metro station before running north toward Zhongshan, a busy shopping district.
He had previously committed two arson attacks in Zhongshan and set his own apartment building on fire also.
Authorities said the man returned nearby his hotel and picked up a weapon before re-emerging in the shopping district.
Videos showed the man in the middle of the street throwing more smoke bombs in different directions before taking out a long knife to randomly slash civilians.
The man later entered a department store, continuing the stabbing spree, where police pursued him.
He then jumped from the fifth floor of the building in an attempt to evade arrest and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to authorities.
Four people were killed in the attack, including the attacker and a bystander who tried to stop the attacker, and several others injured.
Authorities told reporters the suspect had previously served as a volunteer in the air force’s communication center before being discharged in 2022.
He had a prior criminal record and had been wanted by authorities for failing to report for reserve military training.
Authorities said the man’s motives still remain unclear, and Taipei’s mayor has increased security in the capital’s metro stations following the attacks.
