US President Donald Trump held a signing ceremony for his Board of Peace (BoP) on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, and presented a plan for the construction of what he is calling “New Gaza”.

The BoP, which will be chaired by Trump, is tasked with overseeing Gaza's transitional governance, reconstruction and demilitarization as part of the second phase of the “ceasefire” in Gaza.

However, Trump’s government has reportedly sent invites to about 60 countries to join the board with a draft charter that allegedly does not mention the Palestinian territory and appears to be designed to replace functions of the UN, according to BBC.

The ceremony took place on Thursday, Jan. 22, as world leaders gathered to sign a charter to officially join the board.

Speaking at the ceremony, Trump said the board would help bring “real peace” to Gaza, describing the initiative as a step toward stability after over two years of Israel’s genocide.

About 19 to 20 countries have accepted to join the BoP, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Egypt, as well as NATO members Turkey and Hungary, with some officially signing the charter during the ceremony.

At the same time, several major Western countries were notably absent, with Canada, France, Germany and Italy, among other European nations, not taking part — and some, such as Spain, declining the invitation all together due to concerns over the board's structure and fears it would dismantle the UN.

During the ceremony, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who was earlier named as a member of the executive board attached to the BoP, shared the US “master plan” for the “New Gaza” reconstruction.

The plan to rebuild Gaza from scratch includes dozens of skyscrapers, data centers, industrial parks and seaside resorts.

However, it did not address key issues such as where displaced Palestinians might live during the rebuilding nor property rights or compensation for Palestinians who lost their homes and livelihoods during Israel’s genocide, according to Reuters.
