Trump Said Iran Has Now Told Him The Killings Have Stopped After He Told Protesters "Help Is On Its Way”
Trump said he was informed by sources in Iran that the killings in the protests had stopped, adding that people arrested during the protests will not be executed.
US president Donald Trump has said that the killing in Iran’s anti-government protests has now stopped, just one day after he told protesters to “keep protesting,” and that“help is on its way.”
Since Dec. 28, people in Iran have been holding huge anti-government protests after the country’s currency hit a record low.
Authorities have cracked down violently on protesters, leaving more than 2,403 protesters and 147 security personnel killed, with more than 10,600 people detained, according to the US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA).
On Monday, Jan. 12, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said “the situation has come under total control” and blamed the US and Israel for the violence in protests, adding it is to provide an “excuse” for Trump to intervene militarily in Iran.
Trump had threatened Iran with US military intervention and said the US will impose a 25% tariff on countries that continue to trade with Iran, adding the measure would take effect immediately.
Trump then urged Iranians in a televised address on Tuesday, Jan. 13, to keep protesting and said help was on the way.
One day later, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, the US withdrew some personnel from its military airbase in Qatar, Al Udeid Air Base, which hosts US troops and other international forces, after a senior Iranian official said Iran had warned neighbors it would hit US bases if the US attacks.
Hours later, Trump told reporters at the White House that he was informed by sources in Iran that the killings in the protests had stopped, adding that people arrested during the protests will not be executed.
He did not rule out US military intervention and said “we are going to watch what the process is.”
