Trump iran negotiation obliterate oil hormuz strait

US president Donald Trump said the US had good conversations with the “new regime” in Iran, but threatened to  “completely obliterate” Iran’s oil wells and Kharg Island if it doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz.

Kharg Island, located about 25 km off the coast of Iran and 660 km northwest of the Strait of Hormuz, is the vital seaport that handles 90% of Iran’s's oil exports.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social on Monday, March 30, the US is in serious discussion with a “NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME” in Iran to end the war.

He then threatened Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global passage through nearly 20% of the world’s oil is transported, which Iran has been nearly completely blocking in response to the US and Israel’s war on the country.

The blockage has triggered a global energy crisis and driven oil prices up to around US$113 per barrel.

“We will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!” Trump wrote.

Trump’s latest statement came after he told the Financial Times on Sunday, March 29, that his preference would be to take Iran’s oil and claimed the US could seize the island “very easily”, adding, “I don’t think they have any defense.”

He also claimed that a “true regime change” had taken place in Iran following the joint US–Israel strikes that killed former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and injured his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who then assumed power.

Earlier that day, Trump claimed Iran had agreed to his 15-point plan to end the war.

He also claimed Iran had sent 10 shipments of oil as a “present” and a sign of respect, with more reportedly on the way.
