US president Donald Trump appeared momentarily confused while meeting Japan’s new woman prime minister in Tokyo on Oct. 28, sparking a viral debate online about his behavior and health.
In the video, Japan’s first woman prime minister Sanae Takaichi greeted Trump and led him through a formal ceremony at Akasaka Palace.
She gestured for him to follow her as a military band played, while Trump paused and looked around before continuing.
Clips of the moment quickly spread across social media, with some people describing him as “lost” or “wandering off.”
“Trump is completely lost. He has no idea what he’s doing,” one person wrote on X.
63-year-old Takaichi was elected as Japan’s first woman prime minister on Oct. 22 after winning the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership vote.
Her victory is being hailed as historic but also marks a turn toward a more conservative Japan, as she supports traditional gender roles and has vowed to expand the country’s military power.
The two leaders discussed regional security, trade and a new agreement on rare-earth mineral cooperation, according to Reuters.
After the clip went viral, the White House’s Rapid Response 47 social media account posted the full video of the ceremony and accused outlets of editing it out of context.
