The US has bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, joining Israel in its war against Iran and possibly breaking an all-out war in the Middle East.

The move came after Israel launched a large-scale, unprovoked attack on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities on  June 13, claiming that Iran was close to developing a nuclear weapon, leading the two countries to exchange various attacks since.

In the early hours of Sunday, June 22, US President Donald Trump then announced the US had carried out airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities, the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, Natanz Nuclear Facility and a site in Isfahan.

The facilities are among Iran’s most significant uranium enrichment centers, marking a major escalation in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel.

Trump said the strikes were a “spectacular military success” that left Iran’s nuclear facilities “completely and totally obliterated,” adding that there will be more attacks if Iran “does not make peace.”

Trump said the US’ goal was to stop “the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.”

Iran has significantly expanded its uranium enrichment capabilities, but it does not currently possess nuclear weapons.

Iranian officials have repeatedly said that Iran does not plan to develop nuclear weapons but will pursue its right to nuclear energy and research, adding that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Meanwhile, the US is one of the five recognized nuclear powers and maintains a large nuclear arsenal with about 5,177 nuclear warheads as of 2025, being the only country that has ever used nuclear weapons in a war.

It is believed that Israel also possesses approximately 90 nuclear weapons, although it has not officially confirmed it, according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

Iranian authorities condemned the strikes as violations of international law and the UN Charter, warning of "everlasting consequences" and vowing to consider all options to defend their sovereignty.

Iranian officials also said that the damage was not serious, adding that the sites had been cleared in advance of the strikes, Reuters reported.

Israeli officials confirmed they were in "full coordination" with the US regarding the planning and timing of the attacks.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned of the dangers of attacking nuclear facilities, especially regarding the risk of radiological leaks, but no leaks have been reported so far.
