This UK Anchor Yelled At A Palestinian Politician On Air And Said Maybe He’s “Not Used To Women Talking”
Julia Hartley-Brewer has been called out for racism by stereotypically framing Middle Eastern men as especially misogynistic.
A British journalist is being called out for being racist and unprofessional after she yelled at and repeatedly interrupted a Palestinian politician on live TV.
Julia Hartley-Brewer, an anchor for British channel TalkTV, was interviewing Palestinian politician Dr. Mustafa Barghouti after Israel assassinated deputy Hamas leader Saleh Al-Arouri.
In the interview, Barghouti condemned Israel and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s relentless attack on Gaza and the war spilling over into the wider Middle East, according to the New Arab.
However, Hartley-Brewer said Israel was a democratic country and became annoyed at Barghouti as he tried to talk.
“We haven’t got time to do the entire history of Benjamin Netanyahu, who is not a popular figure in Israel,” she said.
“This is not history,” Barghouti responded. ” Whenever I speak about Palestinian rights or Palestinian situation, you claim it is history. I’m talking about what’s happening today.”
“Please don’t say that again. We don’t have time for it, you’ve made that point five times already,” Hartley-Brewer said.
“For the love of God, let me finish a sentence, man! Maybe you’re not used to women talking, I don’t know, but I’d like to finish the sentence!,” she then proceeded to shout at him.
At the end of the interview, Hartley-Brewer gives Barghouti 10 seconds to say what he think is an acceptable reaction from Israel.
“To end the occupation and allow peace to prevail for both people,” Barghouti responds.
Hartley-Brewer makes a face and then says sarcastically, “That’s it, brilliant. Sorry to have, you know, been a woman speaking.”
Online people have accused Hartley-Brewer of sexism and racism by stereotypically framing Middle Eastern men as especially misogynistic.
Meanwhile, others have said the interview was beyond unprofessional and added her response was racism masked as feminism.
After the interview, Barghouti took to Twitter and said that Hartley-Brewer’s behavior had been “the arrogance of a racist and unprofessional journalist”.
Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, who has criticized the UK’s biased coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza, also condemned the anchor’s behavior.
“The remarkable and sorry state of some journalism in the UK on Palestine,” Zomlot wrote on Twitter.
