The UK, France and Canada have jointly condemned Israel's intensified military offensive in Gaza as well as its blockade on aid after it said it would only allow a basic amount of aid to enter Gaza, calling it “wholly inadequate and saying they are not afraid to add sanctions.

The UK prime minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday, May 20, at the UK’s parliament after the three countries released a joint statement on May 19, that they are “horrified by the escalation from Israel, saying they would not stand by while Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Government pursues these  “egregious actions,” adding that “innocent children being bombed again is utterly intolerable.”

“We repeat our demand for a ceasefire as the only way to free the hostages. We repeat our opposition to settlements in the West Bank and we repeat our demand to massively scale up humanitarian assistance into Gaza,” Starmer said.

After blocking all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza since March 2, Israel has finally allowed five aid trucks to enter Gaza to feed 2.3 million people, far short of the 600 trucks needed to even begin tackling the humanitarian disaster in Gaza caused by Israel’s blockade, adding that it would only allow a “basic” amount of aid to enter the Strip.

Starmer said Israel’s allowing a basic quantity of food into Gaza is “utterly inadequate,” adding that they cannot allow the people of Gaza to starve any longer.

“If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response,” the statement said.

Netanyahu said the three countries are handing a “huge prize” to Hamas and encouraging it to attack Israel, adding that Israel will continue its extensive military operation in Gaza “until total victory is achieved”.
