The UK’s Prime Minister Channeled French President Emmanuel Macron’s Iconic Sunglasses Moment At Davos
Starmer channeled Macron’s viral Davos sunglasses moment with a Top Gun-themed TikTok.
UK prime minister Keir Starmer has gone viral after he posted a video on TikTok of himself putting on aviator sunglasses and saying “Bonjour” in a reference to French president Emmanuel Macron’s viral moment at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a week earlier.
Macron wore blue-tinted aviator sunglasses while delivering a speech at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Macron wore blue-tinted aviator sunglasses and gave a speech focused on global security, warning that the world was moving towards “a world without rules” amid the genocide in Gaza and rising geopolitical tensions across the world.
But much of the online reaction focused on his appearance, with viewers confused about why he was wearing sunglasses indoors.
People on social media quickly turned the moment into a meme.
Macron’s office later clarified and explained he had worn the sunglasses to protect his eye after a burst blood vessel.
Parts of the speech also went viral for Macron’s repeated use of the English phrase “for sure,” which became a meme in its own right.
At one point, Macron said, “Sometimes it’s too slow, for sure, and it needs to be reformed, for sure.”
Starmer leaned into the moment on stage on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Duchess Theatre in London, during a live recording of Matt Forde’s “The Political Party” podcast.
He shared his video with a caption referencing the film “Top Gun,” writing: “Talk to me, Goose,” and posting the clip across TikTok and X.
The caption references the 1986 film “Top Gun” said by Tom Cruise’s character Maverick to his co-pilot, whose nickname is Goose.
Macron responded directly in the comments on TikTok with his now iconic phrase, writing “For sure”, and Starmer replied again with an AI-generated edit of a Top Gun movie poster featuring the two leaders in those same aviator sunglasses.
