The UK is officially lowering the voting age to 16.

The changes mean that about 1.6 million teenagers will have the right to vote across the country in the next general election in 2029.

Previously, 16 year olds could already vote in Scotland and Wales, but not in England or Northern Ireland.

UK prime minister Keir Starmer said if young people are old enough to work and pay taxes, then they should have the opportunity to say what they want their money spent on.

The government hopes that the changes will help to increase participation and trust in the electoral system, after the last national election in 2024 suffered the lowest turnout since 2001.

This is the biggest reform to the electoral system in the UK since 1969 and is expected to be approved by the parliament.
