Ukraine held a press conference on Monday, April 14, when the two Chinese fighters who it captured fighting for Russia claimed they were recruited into the Russian military through social media ads on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

The two Chinese citizens were captured by Ukraine while they were fighting illegally for Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine.

"I saw some videos on Douyin featuring people in military uniforms holding weapons. They were appealing," one of the captured soldiers, 33-year-old Wang Guangjun, a former rehabilitation therapist from Henan Province, said.
