The UN Security Council Has Passed A Resolution Authorizing Trump’s Peace Board And International Force In Gaza
The resolution mandates the establishment of a transitional administration called the board of peace, which will be chaired by Trump, to govern Gaza during a transitional period until Dec. 31, 2027.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a US-drafted resolution, advancing US president Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
The resolution mandates the establishment of a transitional administration called the board of peace, which will be chaired by Trump, to govern Gaza during a transitional period until Dec. 31, 2027, and authorizes the creation of an international stabilization force as part of his ceasefire plan.
The resolution also includes, following requests from Arab and Muslim countries, the establishment of a “credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood”, if the Palestinian Authority makes reforms and there is progress in redeveloping Gaza.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said prior to the vote that Israel opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state and will keep on stopping it.
The resolution says the stabilization force will help secure border areas along with a trained and vetted Palestinian police force, working closely with Egypt and Israel, and the force will coordinate with other countries to secure the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
It also authorizes the stabilization force to ensure “the process of demilitarizing the Gaza Strip” and “the permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups” and “use all necessary measures to carry out its mandate”.
The resolution says Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza “based on standards, milestones, and timeframes linked to demilitarization”, agreed by the stabilization force, Israeli forces, the US and the guarantors of the ceasefire, according to Al Jazeera.
The UNSC adopted the resolution on Monday, Nov. 17, with a vote of 13 in favor and two abstentions, Russia and China.
Russia and China said they opposed the resolution, as it is giving complete control of Gaza to the board of peace and the stabilization force without clearly defining the UN's role in Gaza's future.
Hamas rejected the resolution, saying it imposes international guardianship over Gaza and reiterated its refusal to disarm.
The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, issued a statement welcoming the resolution.
