The US and Israel have launched joint unprovoked attacks on Iran, saying it is an attempt to “obliterate” Iran’s nuclear threats and to “enable regime change.”

The US and Iran had been holding negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program in Geneva, Switzerland, mediated by Oman, which ended on Thursday, Feb. 26, without a breakthrough.

Oman’s foreign minister said on Friday, Feb. 27, that Iran has agreed to degrade its stockpiles of nuclear material to “the lowest level possible” — effectively to unrefined levels — adding that a deal was “within reach,” with negotiations expected to be resumed in less than a week in Vienna.

However, on Saturday, Feb. 28, US president Donald Trump announced Israel and the US are launching a “major combat operation” in Iran to “obliterate” Iran’s missile industry, claiming Iran had rejected “every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes on Iran aim to remove an “existential threat” and to help empower the Iranian people to shape their own future.

The US military Central Command said it wanted to "dismantle the Iranian regime's security apparatus, prioritizing locations that posed an imminent threat," according to the BBC.

US missiles, drones and Israeli fighter jets targeted more than 500 sites across Iran, including Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz, Kermanshah and Qom.

Three strikes hit a girls’ elementary school, Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school, in Minab, southern Iran, killing at least 100 children, according to Iranian officials.

The strikes also targeted Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s residence.

Iran's Red Crescent said at least 201 people had been killed and 747 injured in the attacks by late Saturday.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Israel and the US launched a war that was "wholly unprovoked, illegal and illegitimate."

Iran then launched attacks on Israel and US bases in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Oman’s Duqm port.

Trump later announced on his Truth Social that Khamenei had been assassinated as part of the attack, which was confirmed by Iran on Sunday, March 1.
