The WHO’s Director Broke Down Talking About The Dire Conditions Palestinians Are Facing In Gaza
“I am a true believer because of my own experience that war doesn’t bring solutions except more war, more hatred, more agony, more destruction.”
The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has broken down in tears while demanding a ceasefire and a “true solution” to the war on Gaza.
Addressing the WHO Executive Board in Geneva on Thursday Jan. 25 during a discussion about the health emergency in Gaza, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus became emotional, describing conditions in Gaza as “hellish.”
The fact that 70% of those killed in the Gaza Strip have been women and children should be motivation enough to bring about a ceasefire that was long overdue, he said.
“If we look for a solution, it’s always possible,” Ghebreyesus said, after pausing to compose himself. “It’s only the will that’s required.”
“I am a true believer because of my own experience that war doesn’t bring solutions except more war, more hatred, more agony, more destruction,” Ghebreyesus said, wiping his eyes as he cited his own years living through conflict in Ethiopia.
“Struggling to speak because… the situation is beyond words,” he added.
In the same address, the WHO chief warned that more people in Gaza would die of starvation and disease.
“If you add all that, I think it’s not easy to understand how hellish the situation is,” he said.
Meanwhile, Israel’s UN ambassador accused Ghebreyesus of “colluding” with Hamas after he got emotional during his speech.
“The statement by the director-general was the embodiment of everything that is wrong with WHO since October 7th. No mention of the hostages, the rapes, the murder of Israelis, nor the militarization of hospitals and Hamas’ despicable use of human shields,” Shahar said.
Israel has targeted hospitals and medical centers in Gaza since declaring war on Hamas, destroying numerous and leaving only 16 barely functioning.
At least 26,422 Palestinians have been killed and more than 60,000 wounded by Israeli forces in Gaza since Oct.
