Hamas Has Confirmed Israel Killed Its Spokesperson Abu Obeida In A Targeted Strike In Gaza In August
“We pause in reverence before the masked man loved by millions — the great martyred commander and spokesperson of the Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida,” the spokesman said.
Hamas confirmed on Monday, Dec. 29, that Israel had killed its top military spokesperson Abu Obeida in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City in August.
The announcement came in a video statement released by Hamas’s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, on its Telegram channel.
In the video, a masked spokesman said Abu Obeida had been killed months earlier, marking the group’s first public acknowledgment of his death.
“We pause in reverence before the masked man loved by millions — the great martyred commander and spokesperson of the Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida,” the spokesman said.
Israel had first claimed to have killed Obeida on Aug. 30, a day after it announced the “initial stages” of a takeover of Gaza City.
On Aug. 29, Israel declared the city a “combat zone” and halted humanitarian pauses that had briefly allowed limited aid to enter.
The next day, Israel bombed a residential building in Gaza City and killed 11 people in the attack, which they claimed was aimed at killing Abu Obeida.
At the time, Hamas refused to confirm the claim and called it propaganda, instead confirming the assassination of senior Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar.
Abu Obeida, whose real name was Hudhayfah Samir al-Kahlout, had been the target of multiple Israeli assassination attempts since becoming Hamas’ sole military spokesman.
In the same video released Monday, Hamas also announced the deaths of four other senior commanders, including the head of the group’s Rafah Brigade Mohammed Shabanah.
