European Cup winner duo Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams’ chemistry caught the eyes of fans as they bounced off each other during the month-long tournament.
22-year-old Nico Williams, who currently plays for Athletic Bilbao, scored a crucial goal in the Euros final against England, when they won 2-1.
The connection between Barcelona’s very own Yamal, who was named the tournament’s best young player for scoring a goal and assisting four, and Williams sparked interest among thousands of fans.
With Williams’s contract release clause worth US$63 million and the famous La Liga side Barcelona reportedly in a debt of over US$1.36 billion, fans could not help but donate to obtain Williams.
Fans donated with comments such as “Hopefully this is enough for Nico”, “Please sign Nico Williams”, and “For Nico (Keep the Change)”.
Despite the fan’s attempts to help the club, Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta told fans that “he will try” to sign the striker to his club.
As of July 23, no attempts to sign anyone have been made by the club.
The summer transfer window to buy Williams closes on Aug. 31.
