Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Has Slammed Trump For Starting A “Dumb” Trade War

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has slammed US President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada as “dumb” as the US’ tariff on imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China came into effect on March 4.

Trump had announced a 25% tariff on imported goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on all imports from China on Feb. 1. 

Trump said the tariffs were necessary to protect American interests, particularly in response to illegal immigration and the influx of fentanyl, an addictive painkiller drug.

The White House said the tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods had been implemented after the countries “failed to adequately address the situation.”

“Today, the United States has launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, their closest friend,” Trudeau said during the press conference on March 4, when he also called out the Trump administration for working with “lying, murderous dictator” Vladimir Putin.  

Trudeau confirmed Canada was implementing a matching retaliatory 25% tariffon $155 billion Canadian dollars (US$107 billion) worth of US goods.

Trudeau addressed Americans directly during his speech, saying, "We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally, and we don't want to see you hurt either, but your government has chosen to do this to you.”

He also listed the several investments the Canadian government had made to prevent the flow of fentanyl and address the issues the Trump administration had wanted to tackle. 

He then addressed Trump directly, saying, “Even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.”

Trudeau told Canadian people that the tariffs would be “tough”, but said the government would implement several initiatives to “weather the storm”, such as income support and direct business support.
