Kabosu had risen to fame in 2013 with the “Doge” meme, which featured a picture of her accompanied by a caption written in multi-colored Comic Sans font and broken English.
In the same year, her face became the face of the “Dogecoin” cryptocurrency, which shot up in value in 2021 after Elon Musk endorsed it.
In late 2022, Kabosu fell ill with leukemia and liver disease but miraculously recovered after thousands of fans sent messages of support, praying for her speedy recovery.
After a week, Sato said Kabosu finally started to feel better.

Kabosu died in her home in Sakura on the morning of May 24. Sato said that she belived Kabosu had been the happiest dog in the world, and she herself the happiest owner.
“Kabo-chan is still smiling and wagging her tail, still next to me, as she is and always will be,” Sato wrote, thanking all of Kabosu’s fans.
