Hong Kong has jailed this guy for 14 months for wearing a protest T-shirt.
27-year-old Chu Kai-pong was arrested on June 12 at a train station while he was wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times”.
He was also wearing a yellow mask with “FDNOL” which is short for “five demands and not one less”, another popular slogan from the mass pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2019.
At a hearing on Monday Sep. 16, Chu said he had worn the T-shirt to remind people of the protests.
The judge said Chu “took advantage of a symbolic day with the intention to reignite the ideas behind the unrest”.
June 12 is a key date in the 2019 protests, when protesters began to lay down their five demands after a serious crackdown from police.
Chu is the first person to be sentenced under Article 23, which increased the sentence for “sedition” so people who criticize the government could face up to 10 years in prison.
