This 16-year-old girl in Iran has killed herself after school officials harassed her for wearing jeans and removing her headscarf.
16-year-old Arezo Khavari briefly removed her headscarf during a school trip on Tuesday, Nov. 5, but the assistant principal filmed her and threatened to report her to the principal.
Khavari, who had fled from Afghanistan, reportedly already had difficulties finding a school that would allow her to enroll, and she could have been expelled.
A source told IranWire that Khavari was “extremely anxious” and experienced “intense stress” afterwards, even vomiting repeatedly.
Her family then received a phone call from the school informing them that Khavari had violated the dress code and that she had left school without permission.
Later, a hospital called the family informing them they had found Khavari’s body.
Her dad has since filed a police complaint against the school.
Iran reintroduced the so-called “morality” police in 2023 after brutally cracking down and ending the mass protests against the death of Mahsa Amini.
