Israel Got Called A "Liar" At The ICJ After It Denied It Is Committing Genocide In Gaza And Blamed Hamas
As the Israeli legal advisor was presenting her arguments, a protester then interrupted her and shouted “liars!”.
Israeli legal advisor Tamar Kaplan Tourgeman was heckled by a protester while defending Israel at the International Court Justice against South Africa’s request to stop Israel’s invasion of Rafah.
South Africa said it returned to the court to stop Israel’s military campaign on Rafah and to “do what it can to stop the genocide”, which had almost “knocked Gaza off the map” and “shocked the conscience of humanity”.
In hearings on May 16 and 17, South Africa and Israel each had two hours to make their case on the new request for emergency measures over Israel’s war on Gaza.
Israel presented its defense on May 17, saying it has the right to move ahead with a full-scale offensive on Rafah to defend itself against Hamas.
Tourgeman said that South Africa’s statements was “outrageous false statements” and that Hamas “has brought about all the suffering and pain that we are witnessing.”
“There is no doubt that this war is tragic and has caused great suffering on both sides. This is Hamas's doing. South Africa provides an account that is not only incredible incredibly partial, it is also distorted.”
As she was presenting her arguments, a protester then interrupted her and shouted “liars!”.
Tourgeman asked the court to reject South Africa’s request of provisional measures to stop Israel’s invasion of Rafah.
Israeli Justice Ministry official Gilad Noam called South Africa's case "completely divorced from facts and circumstances” and said that the case makes a “mockery” of genocide.
The ICJ's ruling on the latest request for emergency measures is expected next week.
The court’s rulings are final and without appeal, but the court has no way of enforcing them.
However, an order against Israel could hurt its international reputation and set a legal precedent.
