This 16-Year-Old Spanish Football Player Has Become The Youngest Person To Score At The Euros

Spanish football player, Lamine Yamal, has become the youngest person to score a goal at the UEFA European Football Championship, and people can’t believe he is only 16.

On June 10, Spain’s national football team, La Roja, and France’s team, Les Bleus, played against each other for a spot at the Euros final.

Despite France grabbing the lead in the first few minutes thanks to a goal from Randal Kolo Muani, the lead was short-lived as Yamal tied the score in the 21st minute with a fantastic goal.

With it, Yamal made history as the youngest player to score at the Euros, while also assisting his teammate, Dani Olmo, to score Spain’s second goal and secure the country’s victory and entry to the Euros finals.

Yamal’s family, who had attended the game, were in tears.

Yamal won “Man of the Match”, an award usually given to the player who has scored the most goals or played the best.

"Well, first of all, I'm really happy for the victory,” Yamal said during a press conference following the match. “I don't know if it's the best goal of the tournament, but it's the most special for me because getting to a final with the national team at the Euros, it's something super special for me."

“Checkmate♟️🤷🏾‍♂️. Let’s go Spain, we are in the finals 🇪🇸🔥,” he wrote on social media, celebrating Spain’s win. Directing the “checkmate” at French midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who made comments before the game on the 16-year-old.

Born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother who moved to Spain, Yamal began his football career at the age of seven, when he began to play for Spanish football club FC Barcelona's youth camp after moving from his local club, CF Torreta.

He grew up in Rocafonda, an impoverish neighborhood in Catalonia and frequently pays tribute to his humble beginnings by signing its area code "304" after he scores at games.

His fans have started comparing what they were doing at 16 to Yamal’s achievements.

Meanwhile, Spanish rock band, Estopa, dedicated a song in Yamal’s honor during their concert in Spain’s Barcelona.

“Lamine Yamal, everyday I love you more,” the band and audience sings.

Meanwhile, others have uncovered a picture of Argentine football star Lionel Messi bathing baby Yamal, while his mom is in the background.

The photo had started to go viral prior to the match after Yamal’s father posted it on social media with the caption, “The beginning of two legends”.

The photo was part of UNICEF’s charity campaign in collaboration with Barcelona and Yamal’s family had won the raffle, according to BBC.

Spain will take on England on Sunday, July 14 and if Spain wins, it will be their fourth Euro victory.
