England football star Jude Bellingham is being praised after he stopped to speak to a disabled Venezuelan journalist and sent a message of support to people recovering from the earthquakes in Venezuela in Spanish after several of his teammates walked past the reporter.
The moment happened after England’s 2-1 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday, July 1, when the reporter, Manu Gutiérrez, who uses a wheelchair, was trying to interview players in the mixed zone, the area where journalists speak to players after matches.
In a video shared by Gutiérrez, several players could be seen walking past him as he repeatedly tried to get their attention.
Bellingham then stopped when he heard Gutiérrez mention Venezuela and turned back to speak with him.
Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes on June 24, 2026, killing more than 3,500 people and injuring thousands more.
The earthquakes came as Venezuela continues to face wider challenges, including years of economic instability, political tensions and a humanitarian crisis that has led more than seven million Venezuelans to leave the country since 2014, according to the UN.
Gutiérrez asked Bellingham to send a message of support to Venezuelans following the earthquakes, prompting the midfielder to respond in Spanish with words of encouragement and affection for people in the country.
“Mucho ánimo para todos en Venezuela y mucho cariño también,” Bellingham replied in Spanish, meaning, “Lots of encouragement to everyone in Venezuela and lots of love too.”
The interaction has since gone viral, with many praising the 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder for taking the time to stop and for answering in Spanish.
Gutiérrez later said he had originally wanted to ask Bellingham about the game, but the mixed zone had been difficult because he could not get close enough to many of the players.
He thanked Bellingham for stopping and said the moment meant a lot to him.
The video has since been viewed millions of times, with many people calling the small gesture a touching moment of kindness off the pitch.
