Myanmar’s military freed 7,012 prisoners under an amnesty to mark the country’s independence day on Jan. 4.

Some of the prisoners were political prisoners, Radio Free Asia reported.

State broadcaster MRTV reported those jailed for murder, rape or charges related to explosives, unlawful association, weapons, drugs and corruption, would not be released.
