This Village In Portugal Has Been Flooded By A River Of Wine After A Distillery’s Tanks Burst
The spill lasted for about an hour but did not leave a strong smell because it was “good quality wine”.
More than 2.2 million liters of red wine flowed through a Portuguese village and triggered an environmental warning.
The incident happened on Sunday Sep. 10 after two storage tanks owned by Levira Distillery in São Lourenço de Bairro burst.
Video footage showed the liquid rushing down the hill and covering the streets of the town – home to 2,000 residents – with a river of wine in less than a minute.
The spill – which was almost enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool – even triggered an environmental alert.
No injuries were reported, but one of the resident’s basement near the distillery was flooded with red wine.
The distillery apologized in a Facebook post and said it took full responsibility for handling cleanup, repair and damage.
Officials said to prevent the wine from contaminating the Certima River, the fire department managed to block the flood and divert it away.
The spill lasted for about an hour but did not leave a strong smell because it was “good quality wine”, the chief executive of the distillery told the New York Times.
