Russian President Vladimir Putin Said He Supports The Idea Of A Ceasefire But The Deal Needs Serious Reworking

“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it," Putin said, adding, "this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace and would eliminate the original causes of this crisis."

Russian President Vladimir Putin Said He Supports The Idea Of A Ceasefire But The Deal Needs Serious Reworking

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he agrees to the idea of the 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine but set out several conditions for Russia to agree to a deal.

His statement comes after Ukraine accepted a US proposal for a ceasefire as the US agreed to lift its pause on military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine.

On March 12, Russia presented to the US a list of demands to end its war in Ukraine, including no NATO membership for Ukraine, no foreign troops in Ukraine, completely demilitarizing Ukraine, as well as international recognition that Crimea and four Ukrainian provinces it had seized during the war are part of Russia, according to Reuters.

The next day, Putin told reporters that he agreed “with the proposals to cease hostilities" in theory.

“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it," he said, adding, "this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace and would eliminate the original causes of this crisis."

Putin also said that there are still details within the ceasefire agreement that need to be discussed, adding he might call US President Donald Trump to discuss.

During a meeting with NATO’s secretary general Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump said Putin delivered a “very promising statement, but it wasn’t complete”.

“I’d love to meet with them or talk to him, but we have to get it over with fast. You know, every day, people are being killed,” Trump told reporters, according to CNN.
