Russian President Vladimir Putin Has Declared A Three-Day Pause In Fighting With Ukraine In May
Vladimir Putin announced in a statement on Monday, April 28 a 72-hour humanitarian truce from May 8 until May 10 to celebrate its Victory Day.

In a surprise announcement, Russia has declared a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's World War II victory and asked Ukraine to agree to the pause in fighting.
Russia’s president Vladimir Putin announced in a statement on Monday, April 28 a 72-hour humanitarian truce from May 8 until May 10 to celebrate its Victory Day.
Each year, Russia celebrates on May 9 its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, a holiday known as Victory Day, which marks the official surrender of Germany to the Soviet Union in 1945.
In the statement, Putin also warned that in the event Ukraine violates the ceasefire, Russia “will give an adequate and effective response,” according to the BBC.
Ukraine has not yet responded, The New York Times reported.
Russia had earlier declared on April 19 a surprise one-day truce in its war on Ukraine for Easter but both sides blamed each other for reportedly breaking it multiple times.
The ceasefire announcement follows multiple failed diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire, including a US-backed push for a 30-day truce that Ukraine has accepted but Russia rejected.
Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has killed more than 12,910 people, according to Statista.
This story is still developing.
