Actress Saoirse Ronan Called Out Male Costars About Their Privilege On Live TV And It Was Iconic
Fans are praising her courage and honesty while highlighting issues of violence against women and male privilege.
Irish-American actress Saoirse Ronan has received widespread praise for highlighting women’s safety and male privilege while on a panel with several male actors on The Graham Norton Show.
In the episode, which aired on Oct. 25, Ronan was the only woman on a panel with actors Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal and Eddie Redmayne.
Ronan was there to promote her upcoming film “Blitz”, a historical war drama set during World War II.
Each guest was sharing insights about their latest projects in a lively discussion, but the conversation took a turn when Redmayne, who is set to star in the miniseries “The Day of the Jackal”, talked about his self-defense training for the role.
He jokingly said he had learned to use a phone as a weapon against an attacker.
To this, Mescal laughingly responded by saying, “Who is actually going to think about that? If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go ‘phone.’.”
As the men laughed, Ronan tried to add her perspective but was interrupted by their banter.
Norton joined in the joke, pretending to search for his phone in his pockets and telling the attacker “to hold on a second”.
As the men continued giggling at Redmayne's anecdote, Ronan interjected, adding, “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.”
Ronan's comment caused an unusual silence among the men.
She then turned to the audience and asked, “Am I right, ladies?”
Her question was met with applause and cheers by the audience.
Ronan’s remarks quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising her courage and honesty while highlighting issues of violence against women and male privilege.
“The SILENCE is so telling and impactful. 🔥 Love her so much,” one person commented.
“Who's actually going to think of that?" Uh women do, every day all the time,” wrote another one.
Many also pointed out how men often lack awareness of the everyday safety concerns women face.
Ronan is an acclaimed Irish-American actress known for roles in “Lady Bird” and “Little Women”.
At just 13, she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Atonement”.
