On Tuesday May 21, a man went on a stabbing rampage on the metro in a city in Taiwan, injuring at least two people.
The incident happened at 11am local time in the central city of Taichung, when the man started attacking passengers on the metro with a vegetable knife and two fruit knives.
After a 17-year-old teen was stabbed multiple times, several passengers rushed forward to stop the assailant, with a 28-year-old civilian man being suffering slashes to his face as a result.
Two passengers were injured in the attack but are not in critical condition, authorities said.
As the metro traveled for about two minutes, at least nine passengers stepped up to take down the attacker, with others passengers hitting the emergency button.
Firefighters arrived at the scene a minute after the metro pulled into the station.
When police arrived at the station seven minutes later, the attacker had already been held to the ground by other passengers and was arrested on the spot.
Police said that the suspect, surnamed Hong, usually lives in another city in the south of Taiwan, and had dropped out of nursing school.
Authorities said the man did not have a criminal record but had a history of mental health issues and was known to them.
The man, who was injured, was taken in for questioning after receiving treatment at a hospital, and police have launched an investigation.
The mayor of Taichung praised the passengers who subdued the attacker and granted them free travel for life on the city’s metro to thank them for their bravery.
