Trump Has Now Said He Could Be The Prime Minister Of Israel, Claiming He Has 99% Approval Rate There
"I'm right now at 99% in Israel. I could run for prime minister! Maybe after I do this, I'll go to Israel."
US president Donald Trump has said his popularity in Israel reached a 99% approval rating and that he could actually move to Israel and run for prime minister.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, May 20, after being asked about telling Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off attacks on Iran, Trump said Netanyahu is “a great guy” who will do whatever he wants, but added that the Israeli public does not treat Netanyahu well and argued that he is not appreciated in Israel.
"I'm right now at 99% in Israel. I could run for prime minister! Maybe after I do this, I'll go to Israel," Trump said.
He claimed that the numbers came from a poll he saw on Wednesday, but did not name the specific survey or clarify who conducted it.
Trump’s claims are in stark contrast with his approval rate in the US, which continues to plummet just about under 30%, according to the Times Sienna poll.
According to the polls, Trump’s high disapproval rate in the US is a result of his handling of the US and Israel’s war on Iran, which has caused a global oil crisis after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation, and the US, Israel and Iran continued to fail to reach an agreement to end the war.
Other reports also suggest that the relationship between the US and Israel has soured, with the US excluding Israel from certain peace talks and Trump publicly prohibiting Israel from carrying out specific strikes in Lebanon.
Despite his comments, Trump cannot legally run for prime minister of Israel as he is not an Israeli citizen and he does not qualify for many other requirements.
