Trump Has Announced That The US Will Stop Bombing Yemen’s Houthis Rebels, Saying They "Capitulated”
Since March, the US has been bombing Yemen after Trump ordered airstrikes on the Houthis for attacking Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea.

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, May 6, that the US would “immediately” stop bombing Yemen’s Houthi rebels after Oman brokered a ceasefire deal.
Since March, the US has been bombing Yemen after Trump ordered airstrikes on the Houthis for attacking Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea.
Since Israel declared war on Hamas on Oct. 7, the Houthis — an armed group that controls most parts of Yemen — have been launching missile and drone attacks towards Israel and on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea to support Palestinians in Gaza and pressure Israel to end its genocide, which has now killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
On Sunday, May 4, the two sides began escalating their attacks on each other after Israel failed to intercept for the first time since November 2023 a Houthi ballistic missile that struck near Ben Gurion Airport.
The Houthis then declared an aerial blockade of Israel, while Israel began launching airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen in retaliation.
On Tuesday, May 6, speaking during a meeting with Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, Trump said that the Houthis had "capitulated" and promised not to carry out attacks on shipping.
“They just don’t want to fight, and we will honor that, and we will stop the bombings,” he said.
“In the future, neither side will target the other, including American vessels, in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping," Oman's foreign minister said.
The Houthis said that it would stop attacking ships in the Red Sea as long as the US respects the deal but that it would continue its attacks on Israel until Israel ended its genocide in Gaza, Reuters reported.
