Trump Met With Ukraine’s President Again And Said A Peace Plan With Russia Is “95% Done”
Speaking at a press conference after the talks, Zelenskyy said that “90 percent” of a “20-point peace plan” had been agreed.
US President Donald Trump has met again with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an effort to finalize a peace deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The two leaders met on Sunday, Dec. 28, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Speaking at a press conference after the talks, Zelenskyy said that “90 percent” of a “20-point peace plan” had been agreed.
During the discussion, the US signaled it was prepared to support a plan that would guarantee Ukraine’s protection against any future Russian attacks, either through a military response or sanctions, one of the elements sought by Ukraine.
Ukraine has repeatedly pressed for security guarantees given Russia’s history of breaking agreements.
One of the main points of contention remains control of the eastern Donbas region, which Russia has demanded full control over.
The Donbas region has been internationally recognized as part of Ukraine, but Russia has claimed the region as Russian territory during its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Zelenskyy has said that any territorial concession would require a referendum.
Trump, who had talked to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin both before and after the meeting with Zelenskyy, said Russia was prepared to help.
“Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed once. It sounds a little strange, but I was explaining to the President, President Putin was very generous, and this is very important, toward Ukraine succeeding,” Trump said.
