After It Imposed A Blockade On Iranian Ports, The US Has Now Attacked And Seized An Iranian Ship
Iran said the US violated the ceasefire with the attack, adding it would retaliate for the “act of armed piracy.”
After it imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, the US has now attacked and seized an Iranian ship.
Iran blocked access to the Strait of Hormuz after the US and Israel launched unprovoked attacks on Feb. 28, making global oil prices skyrocket.
On April 7, Iran, the US and Israel agreed to a two-week ceasefire to negotiate a deal for a permanent end to the war, and Iran also confirmed the passage would be opening during the period through coordination with Iran’s armed forces, with Iran and Oman allowed to charge transit fees on passing ships.
After negotiations between the US and Iran in Pakistan failed on April 12, US president Donald Trump announced a blockade on Iranian ports, effectively blocking ships from entering or departing any Iranian port, starting April 13, saying it is a tactic to force a deal.
On Sunday, April 19, US President Donald Trump announced the US Navy had intercepted an Iranian cargo ship trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz through the Gulf of Oman.
“The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room,” Trump wrote, adding it would keep “full custody of the ship, and are seeing what’s on board!”
Iran said the US violated the ceasefire with the attack, adding it would retaliate for the “act of armed piracy.”
The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) has since closed the Strait of Hormuz, demanding the US lift the blockade.
Trump appeared to show that he intends to keep the blockade until a peace deal is reached between the two countries.
The attack on the Iranian ship has cast doubt on whether the ceasefire, which ends on Wednesday, April 22, will be extended or if there will be a peace deal.
