The US Has Blocked Another UN Resolution For An Immediate And Permanent Ceasefire In Gaza
The US was the only country of the 15-member council that voted against the draft resolution on June 4.

The US has vetoed another UN Security Council resolution that would ensure an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The US was the only country of the 15-member council that voted against the draft resolution on Wednesday, June 4.
As one of five permanent members of the council, the US holds veto power, allowing it to block the adoption of resolutions on peacekeeping, sanctions and membership, even with overwhelming support from other members.
In addition to a ceasefire, the resolution demanded the “immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups,” as well as the “immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions” on humanitarian aid in Gaza.
US Representative Dorothy Shea said the draft resolution was “unacceptable”.
“The United States has been clear: we would not support any measure that fails to condemn Hamas and does not call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza,” Shea said.
The US instead called for the UN and other organizations to support the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-US backed humanitarian aid distribution group, which the UN has criticized for“weaponizing aid”.
Since May 27, Israeli forces have killed at least 109 Palestinians who were seeking aid at GHF’s recent distributions.
The US has vetoed five draft resolutions since Israel began its genocide on Oct. 7, 2023.
