Trump Went To China To Meet President Xi Jinping But Refused To Answer Any Questions About Taiwan
Trump did not mention tariffs, tech restrictions or Taiwan in his public remarks and instead emphasized his positive relationship with Xi.
US President Donald Trump has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, kicking off a three-day state visit to China.
On the morning of Thursday, May 14, Xi held a welcome ceremony for Trump outside the Great Hall of the People.
As Trump arrived, Chinese honor guards lined up in salute while children waving Chinese and American flags welcomed him with flowers.
Trump was accompanied by a high-profile delegation of business leaders and billionaires, including tech mogul Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
During Trump and Xi's meeting, Xi said he hoped to work with Trump to “steer the giant ship of China-US relations in the right direction,” adding that 2026 would become a “historic and milestone year” for bilateral ties.
Chinese state media Xinhua News Agency reported that Xi emphasized building a “constructive and strategically stable China-US relationship” during the talks, while reiterating that Taiwan remains the “most important and sensitive” issue between the two countries.
Xi reportedly warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push ties between the US and China into a “very dangerous situation.”
Notably, Trump did not mention tariffs, tech restrictions or Taiwan in his public remarks and instead emphasized his positive relationship with Xi.
Trump praised Xi as a “great leader,“saying, “Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I say it anyway. Because it’s true. I always say the truth,.” according to the BBC.
He also said US-China relations would be “better than ever before.”
The two leaders also exchanged views on major international issues including the Middle East, Russia's the war in Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula.
After the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan “has not changed.”
During the state banquet, Trump also publicly invited Xi and his wife to visit the White House in September.
