The boys, both aged 14, along with another boy aged 13 at the time, had gang raped two girls aged 15 and 14 in two separate incidents in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, in November 2024 and January 2025.

They filmed the assaults and shared the footage with degrading messages about the victims on social media.

In May, the boys were found guilty of a total of 10 counts of rape between the three of them, as well as taking indecent images of children.

The judge, Nicholas Rowland, sentenced them to youth rehabilitation, but not one day in prison.

The two older boys received three-year youth rehabilitation orders with 180 days of intensive supervision while the younger boy received 18 months.

Youth rehabilitation orders are community-based sentences for young offenders, involving supervision, counselling and restrictions, rather than detention.

Rowland said he wanted to avoid “criminalizing” the boys “unnecessarily” and support their reintegration into society.

He said the boys were “very young” and had a “limited understanding of consent” and praised their behavior throughout the trial.

He then told the girls that he hopes they will take some comfort in the fact that both of them had shown great courage.

The ruling caused a massive public outcry, leading the UK Attorney General to refer the case to the Court of Appeal for review on May 28.

On July 2, the court sentenced the two boys to four years in detention, finding the initial ruling “careful” but “unduly lenient”.

The third boy, who was found guilty of aiding and abetting the rape of the second girl and filming parts of the attack, had his ruling unchanged.

The boys were also given indefinite restraining orders banning them from ever contacting the girls.

The families of the two girls said they were “deeply grateful” and “relieved” by the appeal ruling but that no sentence can undo the trauma their daughters had endured.
