A white male police officer in the UK has been suspended after a video captured him kicking and assaulting a young Muslim man.
The officer in Manchester, the north of England, has been suspended of all his duties after a video showed him kicking a man twice, who was laying on the ground, in Manchester Airport.
The footage first began circulating on social media on Wednesday, July 24, showing the unnamed police officer with a taser in his hand, kicking and stomping on the head of the 19-year-old man later identified as Mohammed Fahir.
In one video, a group of police officers can be seen pointing their tasers at Fahir and another young man before one officer tazes Fahir, puts him in a chokehold and pushes him down to the ground.
A woman nearby could then be heard shouting, “Stop it! He hasn’t done anything.”
Fahir is then seen laying completely stationary on the floor as the officer begins violently assaulting him as people around them can be heard screaming.
A man filming another video of the incident can be heard swearing while shouting at the officers, “you’re on camera.”
In the video, the same officer is seen assaulting the other man.
Fahir’s family’s lawyer said in a statement outside the police station that Fahir’s condition has worsened and that a CT scan after his surgery has revealed a “cyst on his brain” due to the assault.
The incident sparked outrage, and protests have now erupted in Rochdale, where Fahir is from.
The crowd, which gathered outside the police station, chanted, “Shame on you”, and are accusing the police of institutional racism as Fahir is from a South Asian background.
The South Asian population in Greater Manchester is more than 300,000.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had seen the video and “understands the public’s concern”, adding that he would be discussing the incident with the mayor of Greater Manchester.”
Authorities have said that the unnamed police officer will be facing a criminal investigation for the assault.
