This British Teen Had The Perfect Response To The UK Banning Social Media For Children Under 16

A British teenage girl has gone viral after she gave the perfect response to the UK government banning social media for children under 16.

In a press conference on Monday, June 15, UK prime minister Keir Starmer announced the ban, which will come into effect in spring 2027, saying the law is designed to "give kids their childhood back."

The government said the ban follows the same model as Australia, which became the world's first to introduce a nationwide ban on social media for children under 16 in December 2025, adding it will introduce more highly effective age assurance measures to support compliance.

The new law will ban major social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook and X, and exclude messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

It will also ban high-risk features, including livestreaming and strangers being able to contact children on other online services like gaming.

Sixteen and 17-year-olds will also be banned from live streaming and communicating with strangers, including in gaming.

The government is also considering implementing overnight curfews and limits on infinite scrolling for the age group and will ban AI "romantic companion" chatbots, which are designed to simulate sexual relationships or roleplay with users, for children under 18.

Meta, YouTube and Snapchat have all criticized the ban, saying it risks isolating teens from online communities, driving them to “unregulated alternatives.”

Following the news, BBC journalist Fiona Lamdin asked students about their reaction to the ban at Tarleton Academy in Lancashire, a school that already bans phones during the school day.

One student, identified as Isabella, said she was disappointed by the plan and had not expected it, adding that her main concern is losing easy contact with friends and family.

Lamdin asked Isabella what she planned to do with her free time once the ban came in, she said, "Stare at a wall."

The clip went viral on multiple Instagram accounts, with many finding Isabella's deadpan delivery more honest than any other formal response.
