Netanyahu Has Said Israel's War With Iran Is “Not Yet Over” Despite The Two-Week Ceasefire
Netanyahu said Israel had achieved "historic achievements," but the war against Iran is not finished.
After saying Lebanon is not included in the ceasefire, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the war with Iran "is not yet over".
On Saturday, April 11, US vice president JD Vance was in Islamabad for peace talks with Iranian officials, but talks ended on Monday, April 12, without a deal after 21 hours of negotiations over disputes on Iran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz.
In a video statement released after negotiations stopped, Netanyahu said Israel had achieved "historic achievements," but the war against Iran is not finished.
“They wanted to strangle us, and we are strangling them. They threatened us with annihilation, and now they are fighting to survive,” he said. “I have dedicated a significant part of my life to preventing one thing — that this regime of terror obtains nuclear weapons with which it seeks to annihilate the Jewish state and bring an end to Jewish history.”
Netanyahu said Israel and the US destroyed water, power and uranium plants across Iran, claiming they reached a point where “Iran does not have a single active enrichment plant and most of their ability to produce missiles has disappeared.“
“That is to say, we succeeded here in crushing the nuclear program, in crushing the missile program, and we also had another goal of crushing the regime in Iran. To weaken it to its lowest, weakest level since the establishment of the regime 47 years ago.”
He also bragged about killing Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior leaders in Iran, as well as scientists.
Netanyahu is under pressure from Israel's opposition, who say the war failed to meet its stated goals.
His main rival, Yair Lapid, called the ceasefire "a diplomatic disaster."
Netanyahu is also facing a corruption trial, and Israeli elections are expected later this year.
After the Islamabad talks collapsed, US president Donald Trump announced a US naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, starting Monday, April 13.
Israel has also begun direct talks with Lebanon for the first time in decades about disarming Hezbollah, though Lebanon wants Israeli strikes to stop first.
