Iran Has Sentenced This Iranian Singer To 74 Lashes For Performing Without A Hijab
The court said they shared "vulgar and immoral content" online.
Iran has sentenced Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi to 74 lashes after she performed without a hijab.
In Iran, all women and girls from age nine are required to wear a headscarf.
29-year-old Ahmadi had performed without a hijab in a virtual concert in December 2024 and was detained after the performance video went viral online.
After her detention sparked public outrage, she was released the next day due to pressure from the public.
In June 2026, a criminal court sentenced Ahmadi and eight musicians and crew members to 74 lashes each.
It also banned them from leaving the country and from all artistic activity for two years.
The court said they shared "vulgar and immoral content" online.
Court documents seen by lawyers and rights groups say the charges include offending public decency by producing and publishing "vulgar and immoral content" online, according to the Guardian.
Iran's official judiciary news agency has not published the ruling.
It is a preliminary ruling that can be appealed.
In 2024, Iran has paused enforcing a stricter hijab law, which would punish anyone aged 12 and above for refusing to wear a hijab and those "promoting or advertising nudity" or "immodest dressing.” after facing strong criticism from human rights groups and the public.
