The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has said the world is being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” after US President Donald Trump attacked him for criticizing the US and Israel’s war on Iran.

Pope Leo had previously said that Trump’s threats to end Iranian civilization are “truly unacceptable” and called for an end to the US and Israel’s war on Iran.

In response, Trump attacked the Pope on his platform Truth Social, saying he was “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy”.

Trump said the Pope needed to “get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician.”

Trump then published an AI-generated image depicting himself as a Christ-like figure healing a sick person, drawing backlash from even the religious right, who typically support him.

Pope Leo did not directly respond to Trump’s comments, but at the start of his 11-day tour to Africa, he said he did not fear Trump.

“I continue to speak strongly against war, seeking to promote peace, dialogue and multilateralism among states to find solutions to problems,” he said during his plane trip to Algeria.

In Cameroon on Thursday, April 16, he warned about “those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain”.

He said “the world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants” that “turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education and restoration are nowhere to be found.”

"The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild," the Pope said.

People said Pope Leo was referring to Trump with his comments, but the Pope later said he was not seeking to debate Trump when he criticized "tyrants," according to BBC.

He told reporters aboard a flight to Angola on Saturday, April 18, his speech had been written a fortnight earlier, "well before the president ever commented on myself."
