Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu met US President Donald Trump and said they had an “excellent” meeting despite Trump publicly criticizing him hours earlier.

Netanyahu and Trump met at the White House on Tuesday, July 28, in a closed-door meeting that lasted about 90 minutes and was their first face-to-face meeting since the US and Israel launched their joint war on Iran on Feb. 28, according to AP.

Netanyahu was in Washington to attend the funeral of Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a longtime supporter of Israel who died on July 11, according to Reuters.

Iran was the main topic, with Netanyahu seeking clarity on whether Trump plans to continue military action or pursue negotiations with Tehran.

Hours before the meeting, Trump criticized Netanyahu for publicly discussing Iran’s fortified underground Pickaxe Mountain facility.

“Why don’t you just tell it to me? Why do you have to announce it to the world?” Trump said, according to Reuters.

Trump said the US already knew what was happening at the site and threatened to attack it if Iran did not agree to a deal.

The comments highlighted growing strains after Trump paused some of its US attacks to allow more time for diplomacy, while Netanyahu has pushed to maintain military pressure.

Despite these tensions, Netanyahu called the meeting “excellent” and “one of the best conversations” he had held with Trump.

He said the discussion was marked by “full partnership” and a shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The White House said the meeting was “positive and productive,” according to Reuters.

The two leaders also discussed Israel’s genocide in Gaza and its war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and expanding the Abraham Accords, which normalized Israel’s relations with several Arab countries.

Two days earlier, Israel approved a framework allowing a 200-member international security force proposed under Trump’s peace plan in Gaza to enter limited areas of the strip, according to Reuters.

However, no new agreement on Iran, Gaza or Lebanon has been announced.
